September 2025
We wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of Healing Motion Physical Therapy and to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have been part of this story. Perhaps more importantly, we want to reaffirm our ongoing commitment to serve every person with compassion and to responsibly and thoughtfully care for every resource entrusted to us through this work.
In December of 2005, Healing Motion Physical Therapy opened its doors at 732 Main Street in Philomath, Oregon. Founded by Eileen Tokuda—who served as the sole clinician—and supported every step of the way by her husband, Craig Tokuda, the clinic was built to provide exceptional physical therapy rooted in kindness, honesty, and respect. Eileen and Craig worked tirelessly to create a space where every person felt heard, empowered, and genuinely cared for.
In June of 2015, I (Ashlee) had the privilege of joining Healing Motion as a full-time staff physical therapist. Meanwhile, Stephen climbed the corporate ladder at Garmin Aviation in Salem. We started our family and began to dream of the life we wanted for our kids. We were trading our time for money, stealing away precious moments we could have had together. Then, in March of 2019, Eileen and Craig asked us to purchase Healing Motion from them. In June of 2019, we did. It was such a friendly transaction that left both parties feeling overwhelmed with gratitude. The Tokudas were able to move fully into retirement (view original retirement letter), enjoying new adventures like bicycling and hunting, while we stepped into a successful, values-driven practice that gave us some of our time back. Well. Not exactly. For certain more flexibility. But then…
Dane Happeny walked into our clinic wanting a job. We went to dinner with Dane and his lovely wife Tracy and by the end of dinner, we felt so aligned on our values that we had agreed to take steps to expand our services into Corvallis with Dane as the Operator. In February of 2020, we opened Healing Motion’s second location. And thus began the rapid growth at HMPT. Erin Erven opened our North Albany clinic in March of 2022 after we met her and her husband, Shiloh. Their daughter was, and still is, great friends with our daughter, attending the same pre-school at the time. Kevin Coriano, supported by his wife Allie, opened our Salem location in August of 2022. Kevin and I went to undergraduate school and worked together at a clinic as aides long before graduating as therapists. David and Kristen Holte opened our first Eugene clinic in June of 2024. Kristen, like Kevin, and I had also gone to undergraduate school and worked together at a clinic as aides. She also went to PT school with me and we (obviously) maintained our friendship in the years following
graduation. What do you know, she married a PT and we liked him too! Emily Houston opened our first Healing Motion Pelvic Health clinic. We fell in love with Emily and her husband, Gabe, when they joined our Philomath team. Emily was a staff therapist for two years prior to being promoted to Operator. These Operators, and their spouses, are all people we enjoy spending time with. They are fun. Humble. Eager to grow. And they lead their team by example. They are the best at what they do.
People. That is our secret sauce. We aren’t looking to grow. The growth has found us. We have been strategic, thorough, and beyond picky in who we have hired and who we have placed in leadership positions, and other positions for that matter. Good people know and find other good people. Good team members take good care of patients. And good team members take good care of our community partners.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
1 Peter 4:10
God has gifted us relationships with wonderful team members. So we are going to serve them and take care of them responsibly. God has gifted us with an abundance of patients trusting us with their care. So we are going to serve them and take care of them responsibly. God has gifted us with a community that offers so much to our business and our family. So we are going to serve it and take care of it responsibly.
We are about creating opportunities. Opportunities that someone else created for us. Let’s do this thing in the way it should be done.
Blessings,
Stephen & Ashlee Roderick
